Computers to Predict the

Future

by STEVEN MELENDEZ MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Using algorithms partially modeled on the human brain, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have enabled computers to predict the immediate future by examining a photograph. A program created at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) essentially watched 2 million online videos and observed how different types of scenes typically progress: people walk across golf courses, waves crash on the shore, and so on. Now, when it sees a new still image, it can generate a short video clip (roughly 1.5 seconds long) showing its vision of the immediate future. Related: How Scientists Confirmed One of Einstein's Controversial Theories "It's a system that tries to learn what are plausible videos — what are plausible motions you might see," says Carl Vondrick, a graduate student at CSAIL and lead author on a related research paper to be presented this month at the Neural Information Processing Systems conference in Barcelona. The team aims to generate longer videos with more complex scenes in the future. But Vondrick says applications could one day go beyond turning photos into computer-generated GIFs. The system's ability to predict normal behavior could help spot unusual happenings in security footage or improve the reliability of self- driving cars, he says. If the system spots something unusual, like an animal of a type it hasn't seen before running into the road, Vondrick explains that the vehicle "can detect that and say, 'Okay, I've never seen this situation before — I can stop and let the driver take over,' for example." To create the program, the MIT team relied on a scientific technique called deep learning that's become central to modern artificial intelligence research. It's the approach that lets digital assistants like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa understand what users want, and that drives image search and facial recognition advancements at Facebook and Google. Can’t wait to see what the computers predict. Taken from nbcnews.com

Laptops, a means of providing computer power in a smaller, thinner, more portable package. Portability allows it to be versatile for travelling, business trips, freedom of movement in your house. In a sense, it's a wireless computer, and that’s what people love, the freedom to access data anytime, and brings it to you anywhere. Here’s a list of the 5 best laptops. 5. Microsoft Surface Book. This laptop offers an amazingly modern design that you would expect in today’s world of technology. It just looks better than anything out there. Made from premium materials. You can separate the keyboard to make it a tablet. Great for even greater portability. Great specs. It does have problems, the 3:2 screen ratio might not resonate with an audience looking to watch movies. The battery life doesn’t live up to its promises, and it isn't the cheapest for what it offers, starting at about $1,499, and going all the way to $2,999 for the 1TB, Core i7 version with 16GB of RAM. 4. Dell XPS 13. This laptop, it’s surely the smallest on this list, and matter of fact is the smallest 13 inch laptop due to its almost frameless display. Super thin. Consisting of a touch screen, and a great multi touch pad. It’s a really unique laptop, its design catches attention, it’s a really beautiful laptop that shines, especially compared to most of the market still making quite average designs. And the specs match the design, It’s quick, especially if you buy the high-end option with a Core i7, the optional 3,200 x 1,800 InfinityEdge display which makes watching movies quite the spectacle. On an 13 inch screen, this resolution certainly catches attention, especially considering its most competition. Graphics on the more premium version consists of an HD 540 IGP graphics. This laptop will let you play most games, perhaps not all on maximum settings, but at an enjoyable pace. And battery life is pretty decent too, lasting about 7 to 8 hours. A better battery than the Surface Book. The premium version of this device costs about $1,399. Great laptop, but not perfect, the webcam is placed on the bottom left, making it awkward for a customer that’s used to a camera present in the middle, this had to happen due to the almost frameless display. It does offer pretty poor speakers, but then again the laptop is meant to be portable, they aren’t meant to be party machines. And lastly, it contains only two USB ports which in today’s world are simply not enough. The HDMI cable is lacking, no Ethernet port either. These are essential. USB C along with Thunderbolt 3 is also included, and while USB C can act as a HDMI cable, many TV’s simply don’t have that port. 3. LG Gram 15. Called the lightest 15 inch laptop. This laptop offers a bigger size, but unlike the others, does not offer anything more than a touch screen. It starts at $949, with the premium version coming in $1,299. That version consists of 8 GB of RAM, along with 512 GB SSD. It’s crisp, clear, modern, super light, but more importantly provides value for money, which is why it’s included in this list. 3 USB ports are included as well as an HDMI port. But the speakers just like in the last laptop are poor, the camera is also located at the base. 2. MacBook Pro. Apple’s new device consists of a new addition, an OLED touch panel, of course, there’s a Thunderbolt 3 port along with 4USB C port. Great but considering most devices still run standard USB doesn’t make them of any use. It means adapters are necessary, but it does offer an ability to expand to 2TB, 10 hours of battery. The design consists of a standard MacBook design. Prices are ranging, but can go all the way to$ 3,000. 1. Razer Blade Pro. This laptop beats everything, consisting of a standard Razer design, Chroma lit up keys, GTX 1080 with 4K resolution. It’s super powerful and VR ready. And I7 is there too. 17.3 inch screen. 32 GB of Ram. Up to 2TB SSD drive. 3 USB 3 ports. The only problem, it weighs 7 pounds, and it is very pricey. With the most expensive version ranging at about $3,699
